Giles Kibbe, Astros' Senior Vice President and General Counsel, revealed these ambitious plans during Central Houston Inc.'s 2023 State of Downtown meeting on November 2. The team is gearing up to break ground by the fall of 2024, positioning this mixed-use gem on Texas Avenue, just steps away from the Astros' home ground.

Jim Crane's Vision: A Fusion of Luxury and Entertainment

Jim Crane, the Astros' visionary owner, shared his aspiration to break ground this fall following the 2023 season in a conversation with the Houston Business Journal in March. Drawing inspiration from successful ventures like The Battery Atlanta and Ballpark Village, Crane envisions a development that transcends traditional boundaries, offering a multitude of work and entertainment options adjacent to the city's Major League Baseball venue.

Giles Kibbe emphasized the project's significance, stating, "It's a substantial undertaking that holds great importance for downtown Houston, the city, and the Astros. While expeditious progress is essential, we are committed to making well-informed decisions and executing the project responsibly."

Embarking on a Journey: Collaborations and Design Development

As the Astros finalize details, including the hotel's brand and securing premier tenants, they are collaborating with Hines, a Houston-based development firm, and HKS Architects from Dallas for the master plan. The project is progressing through the design development phase, with an emphasis on selecting an architecture firm that aligns seamlessly with the Astros' vision.

Astros' Downtown Legacy: From Vision to Reality

Originating from owner Jim Crane's longstanding vision, the Astros strategically acquired parcels of land on Texas Avenue and Hamilton Street in 2016, culminating in the purchase of the entire city block in 2019. This 2.27-acre property, currently a parking lot, is poised to transform into a dynamic hub on the southeast corner of the stadium.

Highlighting the broader vision, Kibbe stated, "The plan is to create an entertainment district that can be enjoyed year-round, not just during Astros games but also for other sporting events. Fans can immerse themselves in the experience before, during, and after games, fostering a dynamic sports and entertainment hub."

Transforming Downtown: Astros' Commitment and Investments

This ambitious project represents another milestone in enhancing the Astros' downtown presence. With over $100 million invested in Minute Maid Park since Jim Crane assumed ownership in 2011, recent upgrades include state-of-the-art video boards, a new escalator, and an additional team store. The Astros' commitment to Houston is further underscored by the extension of their Minute Maid Park lease through 2050, ensuring continued investment in the stadium's enhancement once construction bonds are settled.
